Help People in Need by Throwing a Housewarming PartyNSO Giving the Homeless a Place to LiveBy Amy Lange, WJBK - myFOXDetroit.com DETROIT (WJBK) - A renovation project is breathing new life into a landmark Detroit building. When it's complete, people in need will have a new place to call home. There's a creative way you can help them celebrate with a fresh start. You just have to throw a party. The iconic sign on Detroit's Bell Building just came down outside. Inside, they've been hard at work rehabbing the old abandoned building for the people who need it most -- the homeless. The Neighborhood Service Organization is building a fitness center, a health clinic and 155 apartments. Each formerly homeless tenant will move in to a furnished apartment, and that's where the idea of a housewarming party comes into play. "They're going to come to us with nothing. They're homeless until they sign the lease, so on top of the furniture and the things that we're providing already, they need sheets, towels, comforters, kitchenware," said Michelle Bosau with NSO. All the comforts of home, and that's where you can help. Register online to host an actual party or a virtual party. Invite friends and family to purchase items off the registry from a $0.49 salt shaker to a $65 microwave. In all, there are about 100 items -- all to provide a real home for someone coming in off the streets. NSO is hoping to move people into the building by late spring or early summer, so the housewarming parties will run through March. For more information, visit www.nso-mi.org/a-place-to-call-home.php
