The Super Fight between Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley at the Pontiac Silverdome Jan. 29 is getting some big press
The Super Fight looks to be one of the biggest boxing events in the Detroit area in a decade. Mike Brudnell, of The Detroit Free Press, writes "Super Fight at Silverdome to feature Devon Alexander vs. Timothy Bradley": Promoters Don King and Gary Shaw are marketing it as "The Super Fight," which is easy for them to say on a billboard or poster. The bout -- the biggest in world boxing circles for a decade in the Detroit area -- shapes up as a crackerjack contest. It will be shown live on HBO and already is being talked about in terms of "fight of the year." Charleston — an 8,000-foot incline so high that skiers can be seen on the slopes. At night, he hunkers down in the same digs occupied by Mike Tyson, when the former champ was an active fighter bludgeoning opponents. Alexander even sleeps in the same bed in which Iron Mike slept, perhaps catching the good vibes of a devastating fighter who crushed opponents, rather than the vibes of fighter who crashed cars into trees and caused all sorts of mayhem outside the ring. Bob Velin, of USA TODAY, writes "Undefeated Bradley, Alexander agree: Boxing needs this bout": They are young enough to be considered boxing's new breed, but Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander know enough about the history of their sport to realize what their Jan. 29 junior welterweight showdown in the Pontiac (Mich.) Silverdome means for boxing. Both are undefeated and in their prime, among the top pound-for-pound fighters, and willing to fight anyone because they make a point of saying it's what's best for boxing. Bradley, 27, from Palm Springs, Calif., is 26-0 with 11 knockouts. Alexander, 23, from St. Louis, is 21-0 with 13 KOs. He's been training in Las Vegas. Their WBC/WBO title bout (HBO, 10 p.m. ET) is a matchup between two African-American champions — something that hasn't happened too often in recent years — of fairly similar styles, and two highly skilled fighters who like to throw a high volume of punches, yet don't have devastating knockout power. Mike Brudnell, of The Detroit Free Press, writes "Big boxing nights in Detroit becoming rare": For a town with as much boxing history as Detroit -- Joe Louis, the Kronk Gym and Tommy Hearns foremost among it -- heralded fights have been few and far between in the Motor City recently. That's why the Devon Alexander vs. Timothy Bradley "Super Fight" on Jan. 29 at the Silverdome looms large on the local fight scene. You can read his full article here. |
