THE CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY OF DETROIT PRESENTS DENYCE GRAVES,  MEZZO-SOPRANO AND WARREN JONES, PIANO, SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 2009, AT SELIGMAN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

This concert marks Denyce Graves’ first classical recital in the metropolitan Detroit area.

Mezzo-soprano DENYCE GRAVES, best known for her appearances on the stages of the world's greatest opera houses, will make her Detroit classical music recital debut Saturday, January 24, 2009, presented by the Chamber Music Society of Detroit at Seligman Performing Arts Center. The Seligman Performing Arts Center is located at 22305 West 13 Mile Road (at the corner of Lahser and 13 Mile Roads), Beverly Hills, on the campus of the Detroit Country Day School.

Ms. Graves, accompanied by the distinguished pianist Warren Jones, will perform the following program:

This year the Chamber Music Society of Detroit participated in The Margaret Garner Educational Partnership in collaboration with The Charles H. Wright Museum, Detroit School of Arts, Michigan Opera Theatre, Detroit Public Television and WRCJ 90.9 FM; the collaboration is designed to provide an extraordinary learning opportunity for young people with Denyce Graves, who created the title role in the acclaimed opera, Margaret Garner. Winners of the vocal competition will receive tickets to Denyce Graves’ January 24 recital.

DENYCE GRAVES is known for her expressive, rich vocalism, elegant stage presence and exciting theatrical abilities. Ms. Graves began her musical education at the Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts, a public school in her hometown of Washington, D.C. After studying at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory, she received her first national exposure from 1988-1990 with the Houston Grand Opera.

Her debut with the Metropolitan Opera took place in the 1995-96 season, when she sang the title role of the opera Carmen. Another signature role is that of Dalila in Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila In May 2005, she created the title role in Richard Danielpour's Margaret Garner, which premiered at the Detroit Opera House in a Michigan Opera Theatre production.

Ms. Graves has worked with such conductors as Riccardo Chailly, Charles Dutoit, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Mstislav Rostropovich; has shared a stage with singers such as Placido Domingo, Sherrill Milnes and José Cura.; and has sung at major opera houses worldwide, including the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, La Scala Milan, Vienna Staatsoper and Opera Nationale de Paris.
