A Walled Lake woman with a special needs sister will soon be driving a revamped SUV, donated to her by a local auto repair shop.
Heidi Adrian, 22, stood Wednesday with her sister, Holly Adrian, 21, by the gold 2002 Toyota Highlander at Kenny Walters’ Lakes Area Auto Experts shop at 490 N. Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake,
Having the vehicle, said Heidi, is a “huge weight off my shoulders. Things are looking up for us.”
The Adrian sisters lost their mother to breast cancer in February and had been relying on friends to shuttle them around. Heidi left school and her job to care for her sister each day. She had been studying to be a massage therapist when her mother died.
Walters, who runs the auto shop, had a customer come in 18 months ago with the Toyota.
“It needed a lot of work,” said Walters, who has been at the location for 11 years.
“I said he should either scrap it or let me rebuild it to give to a family. He donated it to me.”
Walters and his employees renovated the all-wheel drive vehicle adding new brakes suspension, drive shafts, belts, hoses and tires –– about $5,000 in repairs.
Heidi Adrian said she learned about the contest from friends.
Walters said 150 people applied.
“I went through all the stories,” said Walters.
“It was extremely hard to pick.”
He said seeing other people’s problems made his own seem small by comparison.
After Walters decided, he alerted Adrian on Facebook that she was going to get the car.
“I was speechless,” said the soft-spoken Adrian.
“It means we can get around to the places we need to go.”
Kenny’s Lakes Area Auto Experts full service auto repair shop is located at 490 N. Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake, 248-668-1200.
Heidi Adrian has a GoFundMe site where she is asking for assistance with basic necessities.
